BACKGROUND: The Cutter Class was developed by Starfleet as a dedicated response vessel to answer the growing number of interplanetary rescue missions. These emergency cases often require diverting the larger starships from important missions of their own. Smaller than the Defiant Class but larger than the Maquis' Raiders, the Cutters are designed to use established space stations as home bases, the limited crew facilities not allowing for extended interstellar missions. Acknowledging the possibility of the small Cutters having to answer distress calls in unfriendly sectors, Starfleet outfitted the vessels with an impressive armament for its size. Also, each vessel is equipped with a modified tractor beam system which allows it to tow disabled craft of much larger mass than its own. The design was conceived during the same period of time as the new Intrepid (Voyager) class ships, as evidenced in the similar saucer section features. The first Cutter Class vessels were commissioned five years ago and have since distinguished themselves with an impressive record of successful missions.
